Fourteen landowners attended Llanelli Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, April 22, as Green GEN Cymru (a sister company of Bute Energy) applied for warrants to enter their land for surveys as part of their plans to install two lines of pylons across some of Wales' most beautiful areas.
Dozens of community groups gathered outside with their banners to show their support for the landowners. The Green GEN team arrived at court to slow clapping and jeers from the crowd of supporters, as some shouted, “Shame on you.”
Those called to court included landowners from the proposed Towy Usk and Towy Teifi lines. Some appeared visibly upset and distressed as they entered the courtroom. The landowners who faced the court had been singled out from hundreds of other landowners who have refused to sign a licence allowing Green GEN Cymru and its associates access to their land for surveying. The surveys are both “ecological” and “intrusive,” and many landowners remain unhappy about signing the licence due to the flaws or pitfalls they perceive in the paperwork.
After several short court adjournments and threats from Green Gen to seek costs of £30,000 per person, the landowners collectively signed licence agreements before the hearing. The judge issued no warrants in this instance.
The King's Counsel (KC), acting on behalf of Green GEN, withdrew the applications for a warrant, stating that progress had been made. However, with considerable opposition from the general public, this cannot be viewed as a win for Greengen. This only deepens the divide between the company, their proposals, and the people of the Towy and Teifi Valleys.
Community groups and landowners have vowed to continue opposing the proposals, garnering significant public support. The fundraising continues.
GREEN Gen Cymru’s benevolent, community-friendly mask slips further and falls away, revealing the true face of a company interested in just one thing: its own financial best interests. Their aggressive approach against landowners is not a good look.
It is important to note that the purpose of these pylon lines is to transmit electricity generated from Bute Energy’s proposed wind farms on the Cambrian Mountains, further blighting the beautiful landscape that Mid Wales communities take pride in and wish to protect.
Good to see, albeit in the final paragraph, the root cause of the problem - Wind 'Farms' in the likes of the Cambrian Mountains. No wind farms, no need for transmission lines - aerial or subterranean!
